Local Attractions

One-quarter of Costa Rica´s land is set aside as national forest reserves. This combined with many private nature sanctuaries, hundreds of miles of stunning beaches and a nearly perfect year-round climate has made Costa Rica a popular destination for retirees and eco-tourists. With so much to discover, there is always something to do in Costa Rica:

  • San Jose Museums:

  • San Jose is the capital city of Costa Rica. More than 2 million people call San Jose and it’s nearly towns “home”. While most visitors are more interested in seeing Costa Rica’s natural sights, residents have come to appreciate the museums, galleries, restaurants and other entertainment venues in and around San Jose. Learn about the Costa Rican history and the rich culture by touring the museums and historical sites of San José. Visit the National Theater, completed in 1897, and witness a masterpiece in art architecture.

  • Atenas, Sarchi and Grecia:

  • If you decide to make Plantation Estates your new home, you will come to love the nearby towns of Atenas, Sarchi and Grecia. Atenas is a popular place for Americans to socialize and relax. Sarchi is famous for its fine wood furniture, handicrafts and hand-painted works. Painted oxcarts are a very popular item reflecting the typical life in Costa Rica. Grecia is a wonderful town with a beautiful church and town square. Great grocery shopping, restaurants, movie theatre and shopping mall make Grecia a popular place to relax and unwind.

  • The Butterfly Farm:

  • A unique & colorful paradise; home to over 500 butterflies and 50 species of plants! A working farm dedicated to the breeding of butterflies for export. Check them out online at: ButterflyFarm.co.cr

  • Zoo Ave:

  • The fantastic bird collection (the largest in Central America) includes dozens of toucans, cranes, curassows, and parrots – a veritable rainbow of more than 100 other Costa Rican bird species. Zoo Ave is one of only two zoos in the world to display resplendent quetzals. Macaws fly free. There are also crocodile, deer, turtles, ostrich, tapirs, peccaries, pumas, and all four species of indigenous monkeys in large enclosures. Click here for more information.

  • Los Angeles Cloud Forest:

  • This 800-hectare reserve provides the same experience as Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve without the crowds. The reserve is part of the Villablanca Finca, a cattle ranch owned by former president Rodrigo Carazón. It begins at 700 meters’ elevation and tops out at 1,800 meters. If you are lucky, you can see Arenal Volcano on a clear day.

  • Carara Rain Forest:

  • Located in the rain forest, a perfect spot for exploring trails under the canopy of huge trees. Keep a look out for scarlet macaws, armadillos, collared peccary, howler monkeys and sloths.

  • Poas Volcano:

  • Climb 9000 ft. to see coffee plantations, flower and fern greenhouses & lagoons. One of the few accessible active volcanoes on the continent. Active fumaroles can be observed at the bottom of the crater.

Local Airports

It takes between 2 ½ and 6 hours to fly to Costa Rica from most U.S. cities. Most international flights still land in San Jose's International Airport. However, more and more direct international flights are touching down in Liberia's International Airport. Also, the regional airport in Quepos can easily be reached from the San Jose Airport by way of Sansa or Nature Air. A quick 30 minute flight brings you to the coast and opens up all that the Central and South Central regions have to offer. Daily flights begin early in the morning and continue into the afternoon. Delta, American, US Airways, America West, and Continental have regular nonstop commercial flights to Liberia from their hubs in Atlanta, Miami, Charlotte, Phoenix, and Houston. Liberia is the gateway to the beaches of the Guanacaste region and the Nicoya Peninsula, and a direct flight here eliminates the need for a separate commuter flight in a small aircraft.

Numerous airlines fly into Costa Rica. These are some of the major carriers and major cities:

American Airlines has flights from Los Angeles, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, and Dallas‐Fort Worth to San José and Liberia.

Continental offers flights daily from Houston and Newark to San José, and a daily flight from Houston to Liberia.

Delta offers daily flights from Atlanta to San José and daily flights from Atlanta to Liberia. Delta also has a once‐weekly direct flight from Los Angeles to Liberia.

Frontier offers non‐stop service between Denver and San Jose.

Mexicana flies from many North American cities, most connecting through Mexico City.

Spirit Air has three weekly direct flights between Ft. Lauderdale and San José.

US Airways has direct flights from Charlotte to San José and Liberia.

Taca is a group of Central American airlines, with direct flights or connections to and from Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston, New Orleans, New York, Miami, and Washington
